Welcome to Research and Write - Essential Academic Skills. This book aims to introduce your students to basic research and writing skills at the paragraph and short essay level. In units 1, 3, and 5, learners are introduced to the three components of a paragraph - topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences. In each of these ‘writing’ units, learners practice the primary data collection skills they have learned in the preceding unit (e.g., In Unit 2, Topic Sentences, learners make, conduct and analyze a second questionnaire). From Unit 7, the focus of the book changes as learners are introduced to the three parts of an essay in the From Paragraph to Essay unit. In units 8, 9, and 10, learners are introduced to secondary data collection skills - using secondary data, citing and referencing, and paraphrasing and summarizing. However, learners are encouraged to use the primary data collection skills they have learned in the earlier units when collecting research for their essays. In unit 11, learners are introduced to the argumentative essay - a popular style of essay writing in academic writing and language testing around the world. In unit 12, the final unit of the book, learners have the opportunity to look back at what they have learned in Research & Write, reflect on their learning experiences, and consider their goals for the future. Thus, the final unit is called Looking Back & Looking Forward.
